Myles de Bastion “LoFreqOh Structure”

ARTIST IG @mylesdebastion

Myles de Bastion, CymaSpace founder, is a User Interaction & Product Designer, Artistic Director, Musician, and Creative-Altruist. Born with progressive hearing loss, he develops cymatic technology and art installations that enable sound to be experienced as light, motion, and vibration.

His piece feels almost punk, conveying the energy of a classic kick-and-bass structure in the form of a refrain. This piece was created during the first shows at Sub_Bar, where our frequency range was limited to 30Hz to 90Hz—a range that we have now expanded up to 150Hz.

J2DR “Wünschs für selbst zu erforschen dieine Ziel”

ARTIST IG @dzi.dougban

Dodzi Komlan Dougban, aka J2DR, is an artist and course leader in the field of dance and movement, as well as an expert in non-verbal communication. His parents, originally from Togo (West Africa), encouraged his early rhythmic education and involved him in their folklore group, Dzigbodi. His extensive experience as a Deaf dancer—with various awards, championship titles, international dance theatre productions, and TV appearances on KIKA, ZDF, ARD, RTL, and SAT.1—has made him an inspiring role model within the Deaf community.

J2DR participated in the Sub_Bar Academy during May and June 2024, learning electronic music production using low frequencies. He focused on hypnotic and repetitive rhythms, integrating his deep understanding of body and movement with his passion for music.

Stefanie Egedy “Sub-bass invogorating dose”

ARTIST IG @stefanieegedy

Low-frequency sound artist Stefanie Egedy investigates sound as a composer of conceptual pieces, commissioned works, and experimental electronic music. Focused on exploring possibilities with low-frequency sound, bodies, and subwoofers, her work spans installations and live performances as sonic propositions, forming a body of work titled *BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (B.A.S.)*. Stefanie Egedy has collaborated with and exhibited at venues and events such as CTM Festival, Berghain, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), among others.

*Sub-Bass Invigorating Dose* explores the potential of sound waves and subwoofers to invigorate the nervous system and body. Sit down and relax—this piece is a real massage.

Cigarra “Cave”

ARTIST IG @cigarra_soundsister

Ágatha Barbosa, aka Cigarra (São Paulo), was born in São Paulo, a city where she grew up immersed in the daily flows of immigration and developed street expression tactics within party collectives. She has been a DJ, performer, music producer, and cultural agent for over 15 years. Half of this time has been spent on the Lisbon scene, collaborating with the city and dissident artists. She has hosted resident parties in Lisbon’s main venues and has been an agent in the rise of street carnival in Portugal.

*Cave* is an exploration of rhythms focused on energy, reflecting the various styles of music she plays as a DJ. In *Cave*, as Cigarra points out, “every rhythm is an invitation.”

John Kameel Farah “Globes”

ARTIST IG @johnkameelfarah

John Kameel Farah is a Canadian composer and pianist whose work blends elements of Baroque and Early music, improvisation, Middle Eastern music, and electronic music. Born near Toronto in 1973 to Palestinian parents, he studied composition and piano at the University of Toronto, where he was awarded the Glenn Gould Composition Award twice during his studies. In 1999, he undertook private lessons with Terry Riley in California and later participated in the Arabic Music Retreat in Hartford.

“The flipside of my creative life, closely intertwined with my music, is creating ink drawings, which sometimes end up being suggestive of sonic ideas or waveforms. While composing this piece, I was thinking of one specific drawing called “Globes” (2014). It’s not a graphic score, but it feels like a visual manifestation of the music. Deep, singular bass tones sound like bulging, weighty, globulous drops, but when strung together in rapid succession, they start morphing into looming, shifting contours, just as individual paint strokes are visible up close, but blur into textures when viewed from a distance”

Martine-Nicole Rojina “Autopoiesis”

ARTIST WEBSITE: http://mpathy.eu/

Martine-Nicole Rojina is a professional musician, producer, and active sound and light designer. In her transdisciplinary multimedia artworks, she explores, innovates, and invents future immersive technologies. Her curiosity and empathy for technology, science, engineering, economics, art, and education are the driving forces behind her MPATHY STUDIO. *As above, so below; as on the inside, so on the outside*: she aims to shift humanity’s systemic thinking toward a synergetic, inclusive, and sustainable worldview.

*Autopoiesis*, derived from the Greek words *auto*, meaning "self," and *poiesis*, meaning "creation," refers to an entity's capacity to reproduce itself. Originally introduced in theoretical biology to explain cognition and the essence of life, this concept serves as the foundation of Martine-Nicole Rojina's immersive arts. Her work, *Autopoiesis*, profoundly impacts the body in ways that remain mysterious. Yet, it invites us to ask: What happens when we expose our bodies to vibrational patterns so deeply connected to the origin of life itself?

Martine's contribution to Sub_Bar is not merely narrative or poetry—it is a form of nourishment that our bodies have been yearning for.

Byetone “16hz”

ARTIST WEBSITE: https://byetone.xyz/

Born in the East German city of Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1968, Olaf Bender's creative journey began with the chance discovery of 16mm film equipment during his school years. From that point, he began experimenting with the medium of "film" and the raw material of "film." After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Bender worked in music distribution, an experience that inspired him to publish his own music. In 1996, together with Frank Bretschneider, he founded the record label *rastermusic*, which later merged with Carsten Nicolai's sublabel *noton* to form *raster-noton* in 1999. Bender not only managed the label but also created its distinctive cover designs.

*16Hz* feels like mass taking shape inside the body. Embracing the limits of Sub_Bar, *16Hz* captures the essence of techno, deconstructing its rhythmic and tonal parameters and readapting them to accommodate the needs of a different sensory channel.

Daisuke Ishida “Into the hottest July (2023)”

ARTIST WEBSITE: https://daisukeishida.net/

Daisuke Ishida, born in Tokyo in 1980 and based in Berlin since 2004, is an artist who merges sound and contemporary media. His academic background spans Political Science, Economics, and Sound Studies in Japan and Germany. Ishida's work explores the intersections of artistic praxis and theory with sound, space, and perception, aiming to redefine spatial experiences through ephemeral and time-based media. In 2020, Ishida was appointed professor of Sound Art/Klangkunst at the Berlin University of the Arts. His accolades include a 2017 stipend from the Berlin Senate for New Music and Sound Art.

On July 27, 2023, UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered an alarming speech on climate at the UN headquarters in New York City, stating: “According to the data released today, July has already seen the hottest three-week period ever recorded; the three hottest days on record; and the highest-ever ocean temperatures for this time of year. The era of global warming has ended; the era of global boiling has arrived.”

The field recording used in this piece was made in Berlin Neukölln, Germany, during a thunderstorm on June 26, 2023, just before the hottest July on record. This piece is designed to be played back with subwoofer(s) at the loudest possible volume.
